Ever since the first day I tried FOF, in the early 70s, they've been my all-time favorite. We'd also pronounce the full name Post Fortified Oat Flakes. There was a magical moment in '89 or '90 after I stumbled across a generic store brand that was obviously supposed to be similar. Indeed the taste was fairly close, and I was already feeling pretty satisfied, so I just didn't expect it, but it happened. There on the shelf, right next to the generic brand, were boxes of the Real Thing, PFOF! Only the people at this site can appreciate how thrilled I was! I could scarcely my fortune -- a store that was carrying PFOF in plenitude. Pinched for funds, I bought a box of each, the Real Thing and the generic brand. It only confirmed that the generic brand was close, but not exact. But how utterly satisfying to taste once again, after almost two decades, that smooth, buttery, oaty flavor! Had I known, I would have bought every box on the entire shelf and asked them to root out any spare cases in the back warehouse, including any cases past their expiration date -- I would have picked through rodent carcasses looking for the good flakes. For it turned out that that was the last box I've seen. The next visit to the store, they were already cleaned out, and another two decades have now passed by without so much as a trace. It seems surreal to me now, that this fortuitous store visit even occurred, and that it would occur only once. I would pay big money to get another box. Got that? BIG MONEY!!!
