What are your top ten favorite movies from the 90s?

    By: C. Patterson
    • 10. In the Name of the Father
I prefer this performance over Daniel Day Lewis's performance in MY LEFT FOOT. This film was not seen by many, which is a shame...and deservedly got many Oscar nominations. Not to be missed...based on true events.
    • 9. Schindler's List
Excellent film. Many will ask why this is not number one on my list, I have many reasons...but this is a definate film that should be shown to everyone. Steven Speilberg is a great director.
    • 8. Shine
Geoffrey Rush pulls off an excellent performance as real life pianist David Helfgott. Great direction also helps this as being a great film.
    • 7. L.A. Confidential
Curtis Hanson's masterpiece has a great cast and great script. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, this movie made stars out of Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce...and won Kim Basinger an Oscar.
    • 6. A Few Good Men
Great acting from all around (especially the main cast Nicholson, Cruise, and Moore) work from an excellent script based on a play. One of Rob Reiner's great directed works.
    • 5. Tombstone
Hands down, the funniest and most action packed western in recent years. Val Kilmer, and Kurt Russell are hilarious in thier roles.
    • 4. Donnie Brasco
Al Pacino and Johnny Depp pull off a movie based on true events, because of a great script.
    • 3. The Shawshank Redemption
Great story from Stephen King and great acting pull this together. The end is excellent.
    • 2. American Beauty
Deservedly one of the best movies of recent memory. The acting, script, direction, and cinematography all pull together as one and make a brilliant film about events that may be too close to home for some.
    • 1. Saving Private Ryan
In my opinion, the greatest movie ever made dealing with WWII events. ONE thing wrong though (nothing major): I cannot see TED DANSON as part of a dramatic/war ensemble...thank God he was not one of the major 8 in the film.
Many other excellent films were filmed and released in the 90s...and even though this is my top ten now, It might not be my top ten next week. Although, I believe numbers one and two will always be numbers one and two.

    • 10. Pulp Fiction
appearing in afi's top 100 movies list, this deserves to be in the top 10 list of the 90's despite is lack of popularity.
    • 9. L.A. Confidential
Titanic may have won the oscar for Best Picture of 1997, but L.A. Confidential was the best movie of '97. it had a better story and screenplay.
    • 8. Goodfellas
a true story about the life of a gangster. great story and a true classic.
    • 7. American Beauty
could be called a movie about everyday life. great story and screenplay.
    • 6. Dances with Wolves
Kevin Costner did a great job in making this movie. an adventure you'll never forget. a great film.
    • 5. Fargo
completely original. a mix between a comedy and a thriller. not the kind of movie we expected to be made. great acting and great screenplay.
    • 4. Forrest Gump
a true classic. well acted, great screenplay, very influential.
    • 3. Saving Private Ryan
very well-done. very influential. might be the most memorable movie of the 90's.
    • 2. The Silence of the Lambs
no movie of the 90's had better acting than this one. not to mention it probably has the best screenplay too. If they were to give out an oscar for Best Picture of the Decade, this could win it.
    • 1. Schindler's List
unquestionbly the best movie of the 90's. not usually everybody's favorite because of its reality of the holocaust, but maybe the best movie of all time. also the most influential movie of the 90's.
its wrong to put a movie in the top ten list just because its one of our favorites, we should choose the movies that we think are the best and the most well-made. my favorite movie of the 90's is Jurassic Park, but as we all should know it wasn't goodt enough to be in the top 10 list. movies that almost made my lis are Braveheart, The Shawshank Redemption, Unforgiven, and The English Patient. Titanic was good, very moving, and had great special effects, but the screenplay was almost terrible as many critics said. the writer of Titanic did not make the script very good. it was more of a love story than historic film.

    • 10. Pulp Fiction
appearing AFI's top 100 list, Pulp Fiction is definitely one of the top 10 of the 90's.
    • 9. L.A. Confidential
Titanic may have won the oscar for Best Picture of 1997. but L.A. Confidential was the best movie of '97.
    • 8. Goodfellas
hailed by critics. a great tale about the life of a gangster.
    • 7. American Beauty
can be called a movie about everyday life. a terrific movie, very funny too.
    • 6. Dances with Wolves
a masterpiece and a classic. Kevin Costner did a great job.
    • 5. Fargo
completely original. not the kinda movie you would expect somebody to make. but its great!!
    • 4. Forrest Gump
a true classic. very influential. great acting.
    • 3. Saving Private Ryan
very well done. very influential. might be the most memorable movie of the 90's.
    • 2. The Silence of the Lambs
no doubt the movie with the best acting. not to mention it also probably has the best script of any movie too.
    • 1. Schindler's List
unquestionably the best of the 90's. usually not everyones favorite cause of its reality but it was the most well-made and influential movie. maybe the best movie ever made.
we shouldn't choose movies just because they are one of our favorites, which is obviously what most people did. we should choose the movies that we think are the best which is what I did. other movies worth mentioning are The Shawshank Redemption, Unforgiven, The English Patient, Titanic, Jerry Maguire, Braveheart, Jurassic Park, Shakespeare in Love, The Sixth Sense, Sense and Sensibility.
