What are your top ten favorite songs from the 90s?

    By: Joe Paladino
    • 10. Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice
If this song isn't on your 90's song list, then it's not a valid 90's song list.
    • 9. Enter Sandman by Metallica
I'm a HUGE MetallicA fan (1979-1997; not any stuff aftter the Black album really), and I remember getting all geeked up for my middle school football games to this song, and its still in my current music "rotation" today.
    • 8. Jump Jump by Kris Kross
Comon, y'all know everyone tried to wear their jeans backwards to school and stuff....This song takes me right back to 6th grade (1991-92).
    • 7. Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
The major mosh-pit song at our 6th grade dance, plus it just holds up today...great band.
    • 6. Jeremy by Pearl Jam
Just another great song from another great band. Pearl Jam was HUGE in middle-high school.
    • 5. Come Down by Bush
Further ushered in the "grunge" era, and everyone rocked out to this.
    • 4. Hey Jealousy by Gin Blossoms
I loved this song in 8th grade, and I actually bought one of those "90's Rock" CDs because it was on there.
    • 3. Freshmen by Verve Pipe
This was like "THE" song Jr-Sr year of HS, and was the PERFECT "break-up/depression mood" song. Deep as well. Good song.
    • 2. Alive by Pearl Jam
I just really like this song for a number of reasons.
    • 1. Alice In Chains by Would
Whenever I think of the 90's, my mind always comes to this song. I dunno why, but its a great song; I still like it. Also honorable mentions for the "top slot"- Creed- My Own Prison (GREAT CD!!!!!), Verve- Bittersweet Symphony (LOVED that song), Korn (the entire first CD- used to get all geeked up for football games in HS to that CD), Heaven Let Your Light Shine Down, Bawitabaw, Faith (Limp Bizkit), Nookie (these last 3 songs were HUGE in '99), I'll Be There (Mariah Carrey- in my 6th grade class, this was ALL the people who were 'going out' with each other's "love song", including my first girlfriend and I), Green Day- Time of your Life, Duran Duran- Come UnDone+ Ordinary World, Whoomp There it Is (Tag Team, back again,...ok, maybe not), MC Hammer- Cant Touch This, SNap- I Got the Power, Du Hast (RAMMSTEIN!!!!!...it was big in my town), and so many others

    By: Dr Tooth
    • 10. Loser by Beck
Definitive Beck song from the mid 90s
    • 9. Mr Jones by Counting Crows
This song really put Counting Crows on the map
    • 8. Man In the Box by Alice in Chains
      How we all feel sometimes
    • 7. Sabatoge by Beastie Boys
Great song by an ever evolving group of musical master minds
    • 6. Bullet in the Head by Rage Against the Machine
This is the Rage we will always remember
    • 5. Nirvana by Lake of Fire
Classic Nirvana that got many people hooked on the band
    • 4. Toadies by Do You Wanna Die
Shoulda been listening to this song while doing some stupid things
    • 3. Scar Tissue by Red Hot Chili Peppers
      Classic Chili Peppers
    • 2. What I Got by Sublime
      Awesome Sublime song
    • 1. Jeremy by Pearl Jam
One of the greatest Pearl Jam songs from the early days of grunge

There's so many more good songs from the 90s, this is a list of some of my favorites that I think represent a good sampling of good music of the time throughout the decade
    By: Karena
    • 10. So Many People by Hubert Kah
I'm not sure this was 90's, but I think it was. This guys from Germany, but this Cd was released in the US and the whole thing rocks.
    • 9. Cartoon Heros by Aqua
Just a fun and silly song to dance and sing along too
    • 8. Scat Man by ???
Don't know who sings this one, but its quite the fun dance song
    • 7. Hands by Jewel
A soft sweet song to motivate us to get off our butts and help out a little
    • 6. Are You Jimmy Ray by Jimmy Ray
The video is a killer laugh, this guy thinks he is sooo cool.
    • 5. What Is Love by Haddaway
      Great dance song
    • 4. I Beg Your Pardon by Kon Kan
A great remake of the old willie nelson song, the whole Cd is a 10
    • 3. Precious by Erasure
A great band with great melodies
    • 2. Heaven by Warrent
Theme song to my junior prom...love it.
    • 1. Call And Anwer by Barenaked Ladies
Great melody with a killer bridge (I'll be the first to crucify you)

This messege board is filled with the normal pop rock songs. Lets get some other 90's songs from the alternative side of things!
    By: Kelley
    • 10. Big Me by Foo Fighters
Out of the ashes of Nirvana, Grohl managed to form a pretty decent band. Another song you know all of the words to. A sweet little ditty.
    • 9. What I Got by Sublime
Sublime was about to explode. This classic summertime anthem is perfect for singing along. Sublime were pioneers in ska, and this song proves it.
    • 8. Wonderwall by Oasis
Who hasn't cried their eyes out to this song? The most popular Oasis song, also one of their best. The whole album is really spectacular, Oasis at their best. Liam is really an emotional singer.
    • 7. Possum Kingdom by Toadies
This is one of those songs that you can sing every word along to, yet you have no idea what it is. Toadies were an excellent band. This smash song has a sick, distrubing lyrical message, yet it sounds so sweet and pretty. I'd recommend a download, because the alumb's hard to find.
    • 6. Karma Police by Radiohead
Arguably the best Radiohead song. This song illustartes the amazing musical development of Radiohead. The gut wrenching words "for a minute there, I lost myself" get me every time at the end.
    • 5. Here Comes Your Man by The Pixies
The Pixes were the original American alternative band. It was NOT Nirvana, Kurt Cobain even admits to ripping off their songs. Here Comes Your Man is a pleasant poppy tune that is irresistible. This is sugar-coated Pixies, which is definatley a good thing.
    • 4. El Scorcho by Weezer
I have so many favorite Weezer songs, but this was the first one I loved. A tale of nervous heartache, this song is the foundation of nerds who can never get the girls they want. Witty and clever lyrics.
    • 3. Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots
STP is one of the most underrated bands I can think of. This song shines in its lyrics and instrumentals. To me, Scott Wieland has three or four different voices inside him and this is the serious, dark voice. Excellent.
    • 2. Even Flow by Pearl Jam
My personal favorite PJ song. It combines all of the elements of grunge into one awesome masterpiece.
    • 1. Where Did You Sleep Last Night by Nirvana
No, this is not Teen Spirit. Nirvana was absolutley amazing live, and this rendition proves how emotional and talented they were, especially Kurt. This song is chilling and beautiful.

I wish this could be a top 50 list, because there are so many more songs worthy of recognition. Nirvana, my favorite band, had so many infulential songs. The whole Core album by STP was also an accomplishment. The Wallflowers made some amazing songs, and who can forget "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind? Low by Cracker, Pictures of Matchstick Men by Camper van Beethoven, the Verve, Live, and so many more bands just dominated in the 90s. Peace of kids...

    • 10. Nirvana by Heart Shaped Box
    • 9. Metallica by Unforgiven 2
    • 8. Man On The Moon by Rem
    • 7. My Friends by Red Hot Chili Peppers
    • 6. What I Got by Sublime
    • 5. Daughter by Pearl Jam
    • 4. Glycerine by Bush
    • 3. Karma Police by Radiohead
    • 2. What's This Life For by Creed
    • 1. Say It Ain't So by Weezer
Why doesn't anyone else include this song!!!!!!!

    By: Scott Lawrence
    • 10. #1 Crush by Garbage
I get chills everytime I hear this song.
    • 9. Creep by Radiohead
This song was written about me when I was a teenager.
    • 8. Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson
Still gets my blood pumping to this day.
    • 7. Zombie by Cranberries
I don't like this band at all, but this has always been one of my favorite songs.
    • 6. Self Esteem by Offspring
Fluke hit that pulled the unknown punk group into the spotlight.
    • 5. Infected by Bad Religion
Truer words have never been spoken.
    • 4. Violet by Hole
Courtney's rage is music to my ears in this song.
    • 3. Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins
I'm not a big fan of the band, but this is one incredible song.
    • 2. Backwater by Meat Puppets
The most underrated and underappreciated song of the 90's.
    • 1. Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
The song that completely changed the direction of music.

Honorable Mentions... "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails, "Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe" by Whale, "Bruise Violet" by Babes in Toyland, "Doll Parts" by Hole, "Lake of Fire" by Nirvana
    By: Eric
    • 10. Particle Man by They Might Be Giants
These guys have a nack for taking the most over-looked topics and giving them the attention that they deserve, especially simplistic superheroes like Person Man. I wanted to be Person Man, but they had to take it away from me.
    • 9. Big Bang Baby by Stone Temple Pilots
When people bring up the Emo music resurgance, I tell them that I think it all started with this song. The gritty garage music sound and video that looks as though it was taped circa 1983 was innovative and yet it revived a dead sound.
    • 8. Paranoid Android by Radiohead
Okay, the thing about this band that I will never get over is that many critics call them the musicians of this decade. I know that they are experimental, and their sound is so different, but most of their music lacks a rise in action, and so they are very hard to listen to. This song just happens to be one of the only songs by Radiohead that goes somewhere. I also enjoyed their video with its focus centered around MTV Liquid Television's anti-hero, Robin.
    • 7. 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins
Though it should be higher than #7, 1979 sits here on the list because Wyclef Jean's "Gone Till November" was the only expendable song on my list. My only personal testimony to this song, beyond how much I love hearing it, is that I felt rejuvenated on those 3:00 am drives in South County, St. Louis when listening to this song. It reminded me of who I was and what I was doing in that barren wasteland.
    • 6. Rock and Roll Lifestyle by Cake
I've read a lot of these lists, and when I see Cake on one, the song is usually "The Distance". For me, I would choose this tune because, well, they actually are singing about me. They mentioned my T-shirt, my CD collection, and my parent's income tax bracket. And though I will have no tattoos, that is thanks largely to my obscene fear of pain.
    • 5. Someday We'll Know by The New Radical(s)
I liked "Get What You Give", but it never compared to this song because it was the dud-single by the modern one-hit-wonder king of music. If I wanted to conform, I would take "Get What You Give", but my feelings betray that song for sadder pastures.
    • 4. Break Your Heart by Barenaked Ladies
This is certainly not one of their better-known hits. In fact, it is not a hit. This song is the epitome of everything that a loveless relationship would have. He does not love her at all, but he can't tell her because he doesn't want to hurt her feelings, so he goes on not loving her but staying with her. This hurts her even more. Steven Page is without a doubt the most brilliant lyricist that I have ever heard because everything he writes is so brutally human it scares me.
    • 3. Allison Road by Gin Blossoms
When I lived in Indianapolis, I lived just half mile East of Allisonville Rd. And despite Allison Road actually being in Tempe, Arizona, I like to sing this song as I drive down Allisonville. It's just one of those things.
    • 2. Nightswimming by REM
I could choose so many differnet songs by REM to use, but when I want my all-time favorite from the 90's, I keep coming back to "Nightswimming". It's so moving, and yet, I have no idea what it's about. Bravo, Michael Stipe! You stumped me again!
    • 1. Ants Marching by Dave Matthews Band
Honestly, there was no other possibility for this song. In fact, the rest of the list revolves around it. My love for the Dave Matthews Band transcends time, space, and my now ex-girlfriend. If there was a DMB show in Indiana on my wedding day, we would either postpone the wedding or have it at the show. That's how much I love DMB.

I assure everyone who reads my list that all these songs are from the 1990's. I've noticed a lot of this lists have songs from the 70's and 80's. Not so in my case. If you decide to make a list, please make sure you play by the rules: every song has to be from the 1990's.

    • 10. The Most Beautiful Things by Jimmy Eat World
The song is bad ass....It is diverse...Jimmy is so unique.
    • 9. Not A Day Goes By by Lonestar
I cant stand country but this song is so good that I had to put it in here. I dont know what is so special about it except that it is a kick ass song.
    • 8. My Own Prison by Creed
The lyrics will blow you away no matter how many times you listen to it....This is when Creed was at thier best.
    • 7. Miss You Love by Silverchair
This song is so unique from a lot of Silverchair songs. They variations of Daniel Johns voice is awesome.
    • 6. Confessions by Embodyment
I can guarantee you that 99% of people have not heard this song or band. A lyric from the song "One day, we all will be the status quo." Song just blows you away
    • 5. Aerosmith by I Dont Want To Miss A Thing
Great song that reminds me of being in love.
    • 4. How Could I? by Oleander
If you havent heard this song it is on February Sun. It is a slow song that will blow you away.
    • 3. I Miss You by Incubus
Brandon Boyd's voice is so awesome and I love the music.
    • 2. Everything by Lifehouse
The lyrics, the music, the voice.....This song has everything.
    • 1. You Always Say Goodnight by Juliana Theory
If you havent heard this band...much less the song than you are missing out. There is no band to compare them with they are in a class of thier own.

If I had to listen to 10 songs for the rest of my life these are the ones I would listen to. I encourage you to check out some of the ones that you might not of recognized. And if you are looking to buy a CD where you dont have to skip songs get Julina Theory's Emotion is Dead.

    • 10. To The Moon And Back by Savage Garden
Just what Australia needed after the demise of Crowded House. Also check out 'Universe' and 'Truly Madly Deeply' from the same album!
    • 9. Champagne Supanova by Oasis
Noel Gallagher is up there with Neil Finn & Paul McCartney as one of the all-time greatest songwriters & the whole album (Morning Glory) is a gem!
    • 8. Still Fighting It by Ben Folds
...but the whole album (Rockin' The Suburbs) is way better than anything Ben Folds Five ever did. Check it out!
    • 7. Free As A bird by The Beatles
No, they didn't lose their credibility from this. This could have gone onto any album & been one of it's best songs.
    • 6. Sinner by Neil Finn
The man behind Crowded House (& Split Enz towards the end). Seriously, Crowded House WERE NOT a 'One Hit Wonder'. Check out all their other stuff, but more importantly, check out Neil Finn's solo stuff - you really will be amazed!
    • 5. Unsent by Alanis Morisette
...although her 'Jagged Little Pill' album was better. I just thought this was the most underrated song by the most overrated artist (Can you say that?)
    • 4. Lithium by Nirvana
THE best song from Kurt. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit's just a little sold out for me :)
    • 3. Distant Sun by Crowded House
I could really have my top 10 based around this band. Also check out 'Don't Dream It's Over', 'Private Universe' and 'Locked Out' among others. Neil Finn was (& still is) a songwriting god.
    • 2. Out Of My Head by Fastball
At least someone else had this in their list!
    • 1. Time Of Your Life (Good Riddance) by Green Day
I've always loved Green Day, but I thought they reached a new level with this little acoustic number in 1998.

I didn't add No Doubt's 'Don't Speak' because I now hate the band after what they've done to themselves - they once had credibility with the classic 'Tragic Kingdom' LP. Anyone here who is including "music" (I use that term lightly!) like Backstreet Boys or *NSync, please remember that your list is supposed to be about the greatest songs, NOT whatever rcord companys can manufacture!... & there's so much more I'd love to add.
