Description
It was a cereal made by POST. It was in a small box and was pretty expensive. It looked like Wheaties, but was sweeter. I loved that stuff.

I absolutely loved this stuff but evidently the Post company doesn't manufacture it any more. Why I can't imagine. After eating Post Fortified Oat Flakes™, you don't really want any other common brands of cereal. But here's the good news! if you go to the "organic food" section in your grocery store (as opposed to all those other sections with food made out of silicon compounds) you can find way-expensive oat flakes that are just as good! Actually better; bigger crisper flakes, plus guaranteed no dioxin. Don't listen to those creeps who tell you "But it's the dioxin that gives them that special flavor!" Liars, chemical industry shills! Dioxin is flavorless! You don't get a buzz off it either.

I loved Fortified Oat Flakes too and keep looking for them. Also do you remember the little box of Concentrate cereal? I think they made that too? It was maybe a 6 oz box covered in shiny foil and had tiny flakes. You only needed a small amount cuz it was "concentrated" plus it had lots of iron. Yes it was higher priced but well worth it. I wish I could find that too. I will look in the organic isles from now on especially for Oat Flakes.

I was eating a bowl of Life for supper tonight..lol, and I was recalling that sweet taste of fortified oats, I got online just to see if I could order a case.. To my surprise and dissapointment I am unable to get that little box of Post flakes that made my day back in the 90's....

I LOVED them, too. I am eating a bowl of Kellogg's All Bran (Bran Buds) with vanilla soy milk, and it tastes almost exactly the same as FOF.....

I ate my share of this great cereal, I had my wife buy me 3 and 4 boxes at a time. Then to my surprize they took it off the market. I have yet to find a cereal that even comes close to those tasty morsels! My Kingdom for a box of Oat Flakes!!!!!!!

I am thinking that there must be a HUGE "silent majority" that would love to have Fortified Oat Flakes back. We ought to organize as a group and lobby Post to get this cereal back. Let's face it, some products are just WICKED AWESOME and this is one of them. Who's with me?

One time my Mother actually gift wrapped a box for me 'cause I mentioned them in a letter back home. I knew immediately what it was, because what else could have been that size box?

I too thought that Post Fortified Oat Flakes were the cat's meow. I haven't found its equal, but if there's a Trader Joe's near you try their Toasted Oatmeal Flakes. They're different yet similar. They're bigger and crunchier. It's a close 2nd IMO. Being a TJ's product there's no junk in them either.
marcia - January 09, 2008 - Report this comment
I loved them too, they were my favorite cereal as a kid. I haven't seen them in year. All the current oak flake types have other flavors added like cinnamon, yuck. I even tried to find a contact us spot to request them on the Post website, but no luck

I'd GIVE anything for a room full! My mom and I are sitting here wondering if we could get some so I logged on to find a few select group of FOF lovers... I agree MY Kingdom too for OAT FLAKES!! Yum, they were good with or without milk... Someone needs to write post! WE'RE OUT HERE WAITING and HUNGRY!

I'm with all of you!!! I'd been searching for FOF (with no luck)for quite some time and I finally did break down and tried some of the other Oat Flake type cereals but they just didn't do it for me...they've all screwed it up by adding so many other flavors and ingredients! Nobody comes close and that is so disappointing. FOF was my bedtime snack for the longest time when it suddenly disappeared without a trace. Life hasn't been the same since!
Claire the Bear - January 18, 2008 - Report this comment
OMG...thank goodness there are other FOF lovers out there who can feel my pain! I'd give anything for Fortified Oat Flakes to be back on the market. Absolutely nothing else comes close. I agree we should band together and beg ANY cereal company to bring it back!

Hello fellow FOF lovers! I thought I was the only one out here pining away for my old favorites. I called Post YEARS ago to inquire about them and they said they had gone into retirement, but that's not to say that they couldn't possibly start them up again some day, so home springs eternal. The closest I've found are at Whole Foods (and some other similar stores) and come in a large green and clear bag, but they're grainier than FOFs. Part of the charm of FOFs I thought was that they were so light and crispy. Oh, well.
Mick - January 29, 2008 - Report this comment
I too thought I was on an island as AFOF lover. I spent many disappointed moments looking over box after box in the ceral aisles to try to find them under any other name. They were plain simple now everything clustered.

I wrote to Post. Here's the response I received today: Hi, Thank you for visiting http://www.kraftfoods.com/ and for your interest in POST, Oat Flakes. It's great to hear from consumers who are looking for our products because it lets us know how much you enjoy them. The tough part comes when we have to share the news that the product you're trying to find has been discontinued, as you are aware. If products don't seem to be popular with our consumers, and demand starts to drop, a decision is made to discontinue the item. Once this decision is made, we stop making the product and the remaining supply is shipped from our warehouse to the grocery stores. This is exactly what happened with the POST Oat Flakes. Unfortunately, at this time there are no plans to bring back any of our discontinued products. We will pass your comments along to the appropriate parties. We do hope you can discover a new favorite. Again, thanks for contacting us, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy our products. Kim McMiller Associate Director, Consumer Relations

Post Oat Flakes was my favorite cereal. It would be great if we could get Kraft Foods to re-issue the best tasting cereal ever! Send a note to their website letting them know we want them back!

Post is being acquired by Ralcorp. Sould be official later this year. This is our best chance at getting this product back! Kraft Foods ruined the brand and ran it into the ground, but perhaps we can hope for a revival of Post. Keep on top of this merger and as soon as it's official start e-mailing Ralcorp. Be heard! Maybe we can convince the new owners to listen to us!!

Don't you just love the internet for solving big issues such as finding a substitute for Fortified Oat Flakes??!! I found a good cereal recently that is a very close runner up. It's a brand called '365' and the name of the cereal is Oat Bran Flakes. I've found it at health food/organic food stores such as Whole Foods and Wild Oats. It's very good IMO. Trader Joe's is now in Ohio so I will have to try Toasted Oatmeal Flakes that other people have recommended and do my own taste test.

Maybe if they didn't have such a stodgy name they would have caught on. They were so delicious! I still scour stores trying to dind something without all the sugary cluster junk that oat flake cereals seem to have now.

I was sitting here remembering that yellow box of cereal and how much my brothers and sister and I loved that cereal. And we always said it in full, oddly enough "Post Fortified Oat Flakes, please." I thought surely, I'll find some "Hometown Favorites" group where I could order it at $20 a box as a surprise for the next time we all get together. I, too, will join in this search for the Holy Gruel. My humble abode for a box of FOF.

Ever since I arrived in the USA (back in the late 60s) POST brand OAT FLAKES was my favorite. I actually lived on it! I had it for breakfast, took a bowlful to my place of work and would pour milk and eat it at noon, and certainly would not retire to bed without a large bowl of it with whole milk - mmm how delicious was it!! I wrote to Post company asking them to revive it! I wonder why such a high quality, nourishing and TASTY product was discontinued! We need a consumer revolt (peaceful ofcourse) to bring this product back!! Any one ready to join?

Nancy, you are right about the malt. That's what I wanted to say myself when I ran across your comment. I can't believe I found this group. I've been hanging on to a "no expiration date" coupon for years (and I really mean yeeeaaarrrs) taking it out every once and a while and searching the stores. But to no avail. This time I was wondering If I should bother keeping it. That's why I decided to go online and see if there was even any hope of finding it. My search led me here. I think we should email Kim McMiller Associate Director, Consumer Relations a copy of all of our comments here. No interest in FOF? HA!

This is my alltime favorite cereal. I have been looking for it for years, until I found this website. Hope they bring it back. FLOAT FLAKES!!! That's what my 4 children called them when they were too little to say "Fortified Oat Flakes" and do we ever miss them. Back in the day, I wrote and called and did everything but headstands wtih the company. I was told that when GM or Nabisco or whoever (I forget, it's been so long) bought out Post, the new company dropped Oat Flakes. I bet if the demand were great enough they would reconsider, since money talks. Anyone have any bright ideas on what we could/should all do?

And I thought I was the only one that ate that cereal. It's wonderful to see so many other fans of Oat Flakes. I was the only one in my family that ate this cereal. The others were hooked on the sugared stuff. The ultimate bowl for me was Oat Flakes with about 1/2 cup of Grape Nuts on it - what a combo!! the Honey Bunches of Oats cereal has a hint of that great Oat Flakes taste but only a hint, and it's too sweet. Nothing compares.

Wow, I don't think I am misunderstood when I say you all sound like my own mind echoing. I've spoken to friends and coworkers for decades about that great cereal. Does anyone know what the specs actually were? I looked at some oat clusters, they were 30% sugar, beside the regular carbs. I couldn't eat them. So, Ralcorp, not only would I buy a premium box of FOF, I won't be buying anything else.

World's best cereal. Nothing else to say. After reading the Kraft comments, I feel like a father who gets "closure" after DNA tests verify that a body dug up was his son who was missing for the last 15 years. Sure, I strongly suspected the truth, but there was always just a shred of hope ...

I can't believe that so many other people miss that cereal as much as I do. I've spent years looking for an acceptable substitute for good old fortified oat flakes, but, sadly, nothing even comes close. I miss it so.
Nate - June 17, 2008 - Report this comment
FOF had an unusual flavor - hard to describe. it was sweet/salty/wheaty with a pleasant aftertaste. If you didn't eat them quickly, they absorbed the milk and turned into a gooey clump in the bowl - that still tasted good. They had a 'half life' of about a minute. When I heard the big, bad food manufacturer was discontinuing production, i was down. they could offer it today as a 'boutique' item and charge double and many people would buy it!

I grew up eating Oak Flakes (exclusively) as a kid in the 70's. I have always thought I was the only kid that actually liked them. It's cool to read how mnay other people liked them too. Fortified Oat Flakes had to have been one of the best cereals that Post ever produced! The little unassuming tan box with the sheaves of wheat pictured on the front of the box in brown ink (late 1970s thru 80s) was apparently not flashy enough stacked up against other cereals. I'm really very sorry to see that it is indeed off the market, not just out of local store shelves. Ralcorp take note: This cereal may require up to date packaging that's a bit flashier, but the taste of this cereal was truly a winner! Somebody really goofed deciding to take this off the market!!! Be smart: Bring it back!!

OMG!!! I thought I was the only one like this. My dad always got the cereal & I would have to sit across the table and watch him eat it, it was torture! I wanted that cereal sooo bad! I would have to wait until my parents went out for an evening and leave me to babysit my siblings before I could sneak a bowl! The best part for me was when it soggy, but not complete mush. I can almost taste it now! Add me, my father and siblings to the list of people who would by this cereal. Maybe we just all need to email Kim until she gets tired of us and finally encourages someone to bring it back. I don't want it back for a limited time, I want it back forever! FOF! FOF! FOF! FOF!

Oh my goodness! I can't believe this site. I just made a bowl of cereal and all the sudden thought, some Fortified Oat Flakes would sure taste good. So I thought I'd get online and see if I could find any. I also grew up on them. I searched the cereal aisle for years trying to find them. My ex would even look at stores out of state (truckdriver) for me to see if he could find them. I've never found anything close to tasting as wonderful as FOF were. And for me, the soggier they got the more I liked em. What I wouldn't give to be able to purchase a box of them again. Hopefully someone will wise up to the fact that it was a great cereal and we do miss it and will bring it back. One can hope anyways!

What a long strange trip to this group-I ate them from the 60s until I could not find them anymore (when did they stop production?). By far, the best commercially produced cereal and I still miss them. The malt is a funny thing because I love malted milk balls and ice cream too and never made a connection. The other night one of my best friends for the last 20 years, EAS and I realized we are both passionate about our FOF-what a hoot-we have partied, vacationed, celebrated life events, and now we share PFOF. Bring them back!!

So, I'm not alone after all! I truly thought I was the only soul on earth that even remembered--much less craved--Post Fortified Oat Flakes. I can taste them right now just thinking about them. They were good crunchy, but there was nothing like that soaked-in-milk flavor for me! I called Post back in the early 90's to ask if the product was still in production as I could no longer locate it in any grocery store in San Diego. They sent me a list of grocery stores all up and down California where I could purchase my beloved Oat Flakes. I never did make the Quest for the Holy Gruel, but wish now that I had. I could have stockpiled and sold at a nice profit to all you other addicts on this site. Anyway, please notify me of any letter-writing or other campaign to bring back our beloved FOF. I will gladly help out!

I ate this growing up in the early 60's and LOVED them. My kids ate them in the 80's too. I miss them so much and think about them often. I even ate them with vanilla ice cream, they made a great crunch. I would think that with all the popular interest in oat products to lower your cholesterol they would be a big hit. Especially since they tast tons better than the wimpy flakes and stuff they sell now.

I have not found a cereal to come close the taste of Fortified Oat Flakes since they were discontinued. (Late 80's, early 90's?). it is one of my all-time favorite foods. Other oat flakes, (when you can actually find real flakes and not the so called "nuggets") just don't have that FLAVOR–soggy, semi-soggy, crunchy–you could not ruin the taste. Arrowhead Mills comes as close as any manufacturer that I know of to making a decent oat flake, but they are a pale imitation of the real thing. I too still crave this cereal and think about it more often than is probably healthy. To this day I wander the cereal isle with a sense of loss. Every post on this site is spot on! The irony in this whole thing is that it seemed like FOF were discontinued just before the big "oat bran boom" in the '90's, when they could have found a "new audience" with the health food types. I don't know what Post was thinking. Surely a good marketing campaign could have saved this great cereal. I can't believe there are like minded souls out there!! I will bookmark this site and gladly participate in any movement to bring them back!!

Count me as a member of the PFOF fan club! When and where were your last purchases of this fantastic cereal? Mine was in a local grocery store in Glen Ellen, CA (Sonoma County) in either 1992 or 1993. I also contacted Post several years ago and received the same response as many of you, but now think I'll keep trying on a more frequent basis (every few weeks) and clue their rep onto this website. Greeting fellow PFOF fans!!! I agree with all of you. Maybe with the Ralcorp aquisition we stand a chance of reviving one of the best cereals ever made. I assure Ralcorp their efforts will be rewarded greatly if they will bring back Post Fortified Oak Flakes back into production. I first found PFOF in a small grocery store when I was working in Bay City, Texas. It was the perfect start of my day, given that I worked construction. It was fillng and left me satified till lunch. And like the rest of my fans for this great cereal it made a great evenig snack (especially with a scoop or two of ice cream). I am sure there are thousands of great uses for PFOF's but nothing takes the place of that first bowl in the morning.

I grew up on Post Foritied Oat Flakes (FOF), ate them as an adult, my kids grew up on them then around 1995 Post stopped making them--about the same time we moved to a new State. I thought FOF just weren't sold where we had moved so had my family members (FOF also all of their fave cereal of ALL times) and they couldn't find it. I contacted Post in 1996 and was told they were no longer made. Imagine my surprise! WHY? HOW? In the past 13 years I have failed to find a replacement for my all-time favorite cereal. Post/Kraft needs to bring it back as a "trial"...it will most certainly fly off the shelves and prove once and for all they just need to keep making the world's best cereal. It has to come back? Right?

While everybody else was chumming up to Tony the Tiger, I only wanted my "100 % Fortified Oat Flakes. I do hope they wise up and put it back on the shelves. I know I would buy the store out every payday and probably hoard as many as I could for when someone else has a braincramp and pulls them again. Site bookmarked. During the 1970's I was in High School, playing sports, and growing like a weed. I ate an entire box of Post Fortified Oat Flakes every day of my Junior And Senior year. I too comb the isles wondering if I will ever find these on the shelves again. How could they discontinue production of such a great and popular product?

Well I am excited yet sad to find this discussion about FOF. I am sad to findout that they no longer make them. I would always try and find them at some off the wall store every once in a while. It was like trying to find Bigfoot. You're pretty sure it is out there but not convinced. I felt I was the Indiana Jones of cereal search. I was gonna be the Grand Mashall of the Macy's parade and maybe run for Congress once I found them as everyone I know was a fan. I guess I will not get the honors of being the one to find the Holy Grail!!!

LIGHTWEIGHTS!!!! In the late 60s my practically impoverished grandma lived in South Bend, Indiana. The only groceries she could really afford were damaged or out of date products, or samples. She used to bring home a carton of these plain white cardboard cereal boxes with stamped black type in Helvetica that read "Post Oat Flakes". No graphics nothing. Post was test marketing the cereal for years before releasing it to the general public. I ate Post Oat Flakes out of the white box for YEARS before it was released to the general public. I got so addicted at Grandma's house I begged her to mail cartons to my parents in Louisville, Kentucky. I would have happily paid for them with my own paper route money, but my parents sent her the money. Within DAYS I had all my siblings addicted to Oat Flakes. Then they were finally released and hit the shelves locally. As myself and my many siblings went off to college they spread the gospel and had whole dormitories at various universities addicted. I myself went to college in England and had Oat Flakes shipped to me there. I've managed by hook or crook to procure PFOFs until they stppped making them in the 90's. I know a lot of you out there are feeling the pain,...but please, a little respect. I am was Oat Flake KING!

Well, about 5 minutes ago I tasted what I could have sworn was FOF! It's the 365 brand (Whole Foods) of Oat Flakes and they're AWESOME! Lots of fiber (6 grams, I think) and 9 grams of sugar per cup, but they're worth it. If you're looking to match Post's FOF flavor, go to Whole Foods. You won't be disappointed!

Like the Camaro and the Mustang, Fortified Oat Flakes is a classic, and deserves a comeback. I live in Saskatchewan, Canada, and we could never get the cereal here. I would always bring cases of it back with me from my visits with family in Illinois. I am now 49 years old, and I still recall the fantastic taste of FOF. There is absolutely no other cereal I have ever found that equates to this great cereal. It is funny how a lot of us on this page "recall" the days of FOF, and I guess as such, our age shows. Is it we are trying to recapture something from our youth? Are we truly just wanting a return to the things we knew and were familiar with? Whatever, the reason, this does seem to tbe the era of "comebacks" and I truly belive this cereal deserves a great comeback. From classic cars to classic cereals, there really never needs to be an "end."

Ever since the first day I tried FOF, in the early 70s, they've been my all-time favorite. We'd also pronounce the full name Post Fortified Oat Flakes. There was a magical moment in '89 or '90 after I stumbled across a generic store brand that was obviously supposed to be similar. Indeed the taste was fairly close, and I was already feeling pretty satisfied, so I just didn't expect it, but it happened. There on the shelf, right next to the generic brand, were boxes of the Real Thing, PFOF! Only the people at this site can appreciate how thrilled I was! I could scarcely my fortune -- a store that was carrying PFOF in plenitude. Pinched for funds, I bought a box of each, the Real Thing and the generic brand. It only confirmed that the generic brand was close, but not exact. But how utterly satisfying to taste once again, after almost two decades, that smooth, buttery, oaty flavor! Had I known, I would have bought every box on the entire shelf and asked them to root out any spare cases in the back warehouse, including any cases past their expiration date -- I would have picked through rodent carcasses looking for the good flakes. For it turned out that that was the last box I've seen. The next visit to the store, they were already cleaned out, and another two decades have now passed by without so much as a trace. It seems surreal to me now, that this fortuitous store visit even occurred, and that it would occur only once. I would pay big money to get another box. Got that? BIG MONEY!!!

My all-time favorite - especially because it was"nutty" tasting and not too sweet. Any other cereals I've tried, looking to recapture that PFOF taste, are always "honey crunch coated" or full of "clusters" or some other stupid thing that only detracts from the great pure taste. I always searched for them when I travelled until the internet caught on and I emailed Post/Kraft about them and got the same response as everyone else here. Come on, how much can it cost to make them? I can't stand the available oat cereals with chunks of sugar and gravel in them-yuck. These have an existing loyal following and the manufacturing process must be simple and cheap-profit anyone? Bring them back along with all of the Post retro packaging they have now. I thought the special flavor was a "touch of maple"-at least I have a vague memory of that on the box. It was Grape Nuts that had the "malty goodness" flavor (that's how they used to say it on the Jack Benny radio program when they were the sponsor. Post Oat Flakes only moved up one slot from 87 to 86. This tells me that a lot of people read the posts on this site. Go vote and help move FOF into the top 10.

Wow! I never in my life would have believed there were so many FOF lovers. I have searched for years in all kinds of stores for just a box, all to no avail. I loved them as a kid growing up and until they just up and disappeared. Nothing is equal to it but, I found a cereal at the Krogers store. It is Mom's Best, all natural organic Oat and honey, close but not even a runner up. I miss FOF, I'd pay $10.00 a box for it.

I loved the Oat Flakes too. It was my favorite. I've eaten Honey Bunches of Oat for about 10 years now. They are good but I'd go back to Post Oat Flakes in a heart beat. BRING THEM BACK!

This is funniest post web page ever. We are all addicts of FOF . . . based on our memories. I too lived on this cereal when I was a teen in the '70s . . . and it WAS the best tasting seemingly most healthy breakfast cereal on the market. I have been looking for it for over 20 years. How can the cereal conglomerates continue to spew out filth like cocoa puffs and lucky charms yet discontinue Fortified Oak Flakes? I would also pay ten bucks for a box of FOF.

OMG! I was just reminiscing (sp?) about how MUCH I loved Fortified Oat Flakes, which I ate a bunch of in 6th grade (1972-73) especially! I loved looking at the old-fashioned picture on the front of the cereal box too. I used to pretend I was a farmer, too.

My mother used to buy this cereal for herself but I would end up eating it as well. LOVED IT. Brings back alot of memories. Didn't they change the cereal to a blue box in the 90's? It would be great if they brought it back again.

I LOVE this cereal. My all time favorite, no doubt - morning, noon, and of course for the important bedtime snack. I so wish it would come back. I may try some of these options suggested here, but I, too, would give my kingdom for some Post FOF.

FOF's was my favorite back in the 70's. When I found it again in the 80's walking through a local store, I bought 2 cases. I bought it by the case after that. Then one day during a restock run, POOF, to be no more.... I too would pay a handsome premium to have this product back again, esp if they could recapture the original recipe. One would think that promoting the health benefits of oats would be a strong selling point, but I'm not in advertising and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night....

Go vote for Fortified Oat Flakes or Post Oat Flakes as your all time favorite cereal on the Mr. Breakfast web page. Fortified Oat Flakes now ranks number 21 and is more popular that any Post Selects or Honey Bunches of Oats variety. Post Oat Flakes ranks 89 and also is ranked higher than most of Posts cereals that are on the market today. I wonder if Post is using 20 year old marketing data as a reason not to market Post Oat Flakes. I don't think their Marketing people are very competent. They hold the recipe of the best tasting cereal ever and they refuse to take advantage of it.

My whole family jokes around all the time about "Mom and her Oat Flakes addiction.' For years I searched every state, markets large and small, and to no avail. For roughly 15 years now I have never gone to a supermarket without looking for them. It would make my life if they brought them back!!!

Keep up the voting at Mr. Breakfast! You can vote once a day. The ranking has slipped to #22; if there's any chance we can get Fortified Oat Flakes restored to grocery shelves, we need to make our opinions known. Hopefully someone in Marketing is paying attention!

Ever since Post Oat Flakes were taken off the market, I have been trying to make a cereal that replicates the special flavor that they had. I don't care if it is a pellet, a flake, a biscuit, a check, or a puff. What I am interested in is the flavor. I would even settle for a bar cookie that tasted like Post Oat Flakes. The original commercials and packages had the phrase 'Tastes like oatmeal cookies'. Please give me input. What flavors do you recall that were in Post Oat Flakes? Was it butterscotch or butter pecan or something similar?
cliff - November 22, 2009 - Report this comment
I seem to remember that Alpha-Bits cereal bore a resemblance to PFOF taste-wise. Not too sickeningly sweet (most kids cereals tasted identical to Capn' Crunch), but a mild flavor that would remain in the milk. Anyone else think so? Butterscotch or butter pecan don't seem quite right--but that's just my old memory and taste buds.

I can't imagine that demand for fortified oat flakes was the cause of the discontinuation. There must be some other reason! Times have changed! give us back the flakes! Maybe Obama can help us. I will e-mail him, your in trouble now....

My mom used to buy FOF and hide the box because it was so epensive and such a small box, we would have blown right through it in one morning... there were 7 of us. Every now and then, if it was just the two of us at the breakfast table, she'd let me have some with her. But I had to time the eating just right because if I took too long, it would turn to mush, but too quick and it was a little too crunchy. But when I got the timing just right...... perfection! Mmmmmm, I can taste them now.....

I'm laughing over here. I thought I was alone... just like so many of you. I've never liked another cereal besides FOF. So once it was gone, so was my breakfast. Every few years, I do an online search hoping it's back. *sigh*
Oat Flake Lover - January 12, 2010 - Report this comment
Post Oat Flakes were the best tasting cereal by far. Post Marketing always said that the demand was not present. If they would have had a larger box and not so high a price, they would have had a larger market share. I mixed my Post Oat Flakes with other cereals so that the box would last longer. I've always put the blame on an incompetent Marketing Dept at Post for the disappearance of Post Oat Flakes from our market shelves, and not on a lack of demand from consumers.

My favorite cereal of all time, too. So okay, let's think like an Associate Director, Consumer Relations. Or better yet, a Senior Executive Director, Marketing. If Post won't bring them back, then maybe they should search for someone (like Trader Joe's) to buy the manufacturing rights - using this website as proof that there are real customers out there just waiting for this cereal to come back! But Post had better hurry up - those us of who remember this cereal aren't getting any younger and those manufacturing rights will become worthless someday.

I can't tell you how many times I start drooling just thinking about that wonderfull relationship wtih FOF. I'm amazed there are so many others like myself who would do just about anything to relive those days gone bye. If the true reason to discontinue the product was related to the lack of market place demand, then the rights to reproduce this product shouldn't be all that expensive. Does any one know what the oat flake was fortified with?

Request this product at www.vermontcountrystore.com, a self-advertised purveyor of hard to find items. Maybe if they get several hundred requests for Fortified Oat Flakes, Post will consider at least making a limited batch. It's worth a try!

My secret is out. Every time I go down the cereal aisle in the grocery store I look for this cereal. A few years back I was traveling abroad and saw some Oat Flakes in a store and thought maybe they brought them back. Probably just some OLD boxes. With all of the hype about heart friendly oats why not do an ad campaign with the purity of Post Oat Flakes.

I was born in 1957. so I remember the Oat Flakes in the blue/green box before they became fortified. I contacted Kraft and as of yet not gotten a reply. We all need to do so & convince them that now IS the time to bring them back. Oats in general are much more popular now as we baby boomers become more health conscious, and OMG aren't they delicious!!!

My all time favorite cereal. It was sweet enough that you did not have to add sugar to it. It needs to become readily available once again.
Barry - February 15, 2010 - Report this comment
Even as a kid I really liked Fortified Oat Flakes, and I was a sugar cereal junkie (Cap'n Crunch, etc). As I got older, and started having cholesterol and blood sugar problems, I started eating FOF regularly. And then, I couldn't find it anymore. I did, however, discover a superior alternative: Quaker Toasted Oatmeal with the oat clusters. The flakes tasted almost identical to FOF plus it had those oat clusters, which I love. Unfortunately, Quaker felt they had to *improve* it by adding maple or some other flavoring. They ruined it. A few months later, I couldn't even find it anymore. You know, supposedly every company learned the lesson of Coke's cutback on advertising. Unfortunately, they haven't learned the lesson of New Coke. "New and improved" isn't always better!

I loved these flakes in the 60's but they went away. They came back again briefly in the 90's when oats were the rage as a health food, but then vanished again. I just found a very similar product: Organic Oat Bran Flakes by Full Circle (distributed by TOPCO Associates, Skokie Ill.). They have the same flavor (combination of oats and malt) but are a bit crunchier than the originals. Just as good I think, maybe better.

I grew up eating this cereal, my father got me hooked on it. I could eat a box of it a day easily. I went to the local shop-rite and checked every aisle...I'd searched high and low for it, until someone told me they stopped making it. I was mortified, how was I going get my fix of FOF....POST, please bring back Fortified Oat Flakes. There's other oat flakes out there, but none compare to FOF...Just the right amount of crunch, malt flavor and sweetness.

My dad and I ate FOF like crazy in the 70s. The last time I think I saw it was about 1983, when I still lived in Michigan. I've been searching the aisles ever since! And yes, when I go out of town, or hit a grocery store I've never heard of, I'm certain to visit the cereal aisles. I'd also like to see Kellogg's Pep get a comeback. The last time I saw it was in the early 80s, as well. My wish came true when the Vermont Country Store started carrying Lemon-Up Shampoo. I ordered one bottle; at $18 including shipping, it's too steep for my blood (and it didn't have the cool lemon cap like it did back in the day). One other item I'd like to see make another appearance: the original fragrance Dippity-Do (the aquamarine color one in the glass jar). The new fragrance is too pungent. The last time I saw it was about 1990. I still have a half-used jar that I take out to get a whiff of! The stuff seems to be the perfect preservative. Still yet another item that I'd like to see return: Halo Shampoo.

OH MY GOODNESS!!! I keep telling my husband about this cereal (FOF) my family ate when I was a kid (approx. 30+ years ago), except I forgot it had Fortified in the name. It was so desired, that my mom rationed it to us and my dad, as it was a small box, and not that inexpensive. Because we ate so much cold cereal, to this day, I rarely eat cold cereal. But I betcha money if this came back I would eat cold cereal again!!! I called the company about 10 years ago, and they told me it wasn't manufactured, soooo we need to write to the company to bring it back.

What would it take to get Post to make this cereal again? Does Post even exist now? I loved this stuff. I started eating it before I could correctly say it's name. I called it "Forty Five Oat Flakes" for the longest time. I could eat three bowls at a sitting. I loved this stuff.
