Description
It was a cereal made by POST. It was in a small box and was pretty expensive. It looked like Wheaties, but was sweeter. I loved that stuff.

I absolutely loved this stuff but evidently the Post company doesn't manufacture it any more. Why I can't imagine. After eating Post Fortified Oat Flakes™, you don't really want any other common brands of cereal. But here's the good news! if you go to the "organic food" section in your grocery store (as opposed to all those other sections with food made out of silicon compounds) you can find way-expensive oat flakes that are just as good! Actually better; bigger crisper flakes, plus guaranteed no dioxin. Don't listen to those creeps who tell you "But it's the dioxin that gives them that special flavor!" Liars, chemical industry shills! Dioxin is flavorless! You don't get a buzz off it either.

I loved Fortified Oat Flakes too and keep looking for them. Also do you remember the little box of Concentrate cereal? I think they made that too? It was maybe a 6 oz box covered in shiny foil and had tiny flakes. You only needed a small amount cuz it was "concentrated" plus it had lots of iron. Yes it was higher priced but well worth it. I wish I could find that too. I will look in the organic isles from now on especially for Oat Flakes.

I was eating a bowl of Life for supper tonight..lol, and I was recalling that sweet taste of fortified oats, I got online just to see if I could order a case.. To my surprise and dissapointment I am unable to get that little box of Post flakes that made my day back in the 90's....
Dave - November 21, 2007 - Report this comment
I LOVED them, too. I am eating a bowl of Kellogg's All Bran (Bran Buds) with vanilla soy milk, and it tastes almost exactly the same as FOF.....

I ate my share of this great cereal, I had my wife buy me 3 and 4 boxes at a time. Then to my surprize they took it off the market. I have yet to find a cereal that even comes close to those tasty morsels! My Kingdom for a box of Oat Flakes!!!!!!!

I am thinking that there must be a HUGE "silent majority" that would love to have Fortified Oat Flakes back. We ought to organize as a group and lobby Post to get this cereal back. Let's face it, some products are just WICKED AWESOME and this is one of them. Who's with me?

One time my Mother actually gift wrapped a box for me 'cause I mentioned them in a letter back home. I knew immediately what it was, because what else could have been that size box?

I too thought that Post Fortified Oat Flakes were the cat's meow. I haven't found its equal, but if there's a Trader Joe's near you try their Toasted Oatmeal Flakes. They're different yet similar. They're bigger and crunchier. It's a close 2nd IMO. Being a TJ's product there's no junk in them either.
marcia - January 09, 2008 - Report this comment
I loved them too, they were my favorite cereal as a kid. I haven't seen them in year. All the current oak flake types have other flavors added like cinnamon, yuck. I even tried to find a contact us spot to request them on the Post website, but no luck

I'd GIVE anything for a room full! My mom and I are sitting here wondering if we could get some so I logged on to find a few select group of FOF lovers... I agree MY Kingdom too for OAT FLAKES!! Yum, they were good with or without milk... Someone needs to write post! WE'RE OUT HERE WAITING and HUNGRY!

I'm with all of you!!! I'd been searching for FOF (with no luck)for quite some time and I finally did break down and tried some of the other Oat Flake type cereals but they just didn't do it for me...they've all screwed it up by adding so many other flavors and ingredients! Nobody comes close and that is so disappointing. FOF was my bedtime snack for the longest time when it suddenly disappeared without a trace. Life hasn't been the same since!
Claire the Bear - January 18, 2008 - Report this comment
OMG...thank goodness there are other FOF lovers out there who can feel my pain! I'd give anything for Fortified Oat Flakes to be back on the market. Absolutely nothing else comes close. I agree we should band together and beg ANY cereal company to bring it back!

Hello fellow FOF lovers! I thought I was the only one out here pining away for my old favorites. I called Post YEARS ago to inquire about them and they said they had gone into retirement, but that's not to say that they couldn't possibly start them up again some day, so home springs eternal. The closest I've found are at Whole Foods (and some other similar stores) and come in a large green and clear bag, but they're grainier than FOFs. Part of the charm of FOFs I thought was that they were so light and crispy. Oh, well.
Mick - January 29, 2008 - Report this comment
I too thought I was on an island as AFOF lover. I spent many disappointed moments looking over box after box in the ceral aisles to try to find them under any other name. They were plain simple now everything clustered.

I wrote to Post. Here's the response I received today: Hi, Thank you for visiting http://www.kraftfoods.com/ and for your interest in POST, Oat Flakes. It's great to hear from consumers who are looking for our products because it lets us know how much you enjoy them. The tough part comes when we have to share the news that the product you're trying to find has been discontinued, as you are aware. If products don't seem to be popular with our consumers, and demand starts to drop, a decision is made to discontinue the item. Once this decision is made, we stop making the product and the remaining supply is shipped from our warehouse to the grocery stores. This is exactly what happened with the POST Oat Flakes. Unfortunately, at this time there are no plans to bring back any of our discontinued products. We will pass your comments along to the appropriate parties. We do hope you can discover a new favorite. Again, thanks for contacting us, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy our products. Kim McMiller Associate Director, Consumer Relations

Post Oat Flakes was my favorite cereal. It would be great if we could get Kraft Foods to re-issue the best tasting cereal ever! Send a note to their website letting them know we want them back!

Post is being acquired by Ralcorp. Sould be official later this year. This is our best chance at getting this product back! Kraft Foods ruined the brand and ran it into the ground, but perhaps we can hope for a revival of Post. Keep on top of this merger and as soon as it's official start e-mailing Ralcorp. Be heard! Maybe we can convince the new owners to listen to us!!

Don't you just love the internet for solving big issues such as finding a substitute for Fortified Oat Flakes??!! I found a good cereal recently that is a very close runner up. It's a brand called '365' and the name of the cereal is Oat Bran Flakes. I've found it at health food/organic food stores such as Whole Foods and Wild Oats. It's very good IMO. Trader Joe's is now in Ohio so I will have to try Toasted Oatmeal Flakes that other people have recommended and do my own taste test.

Maybe if they didn't have such a stodgy name they would have caught on. They were so delicious! I still scour stores trying to dind something without all the sugary cluster junk that oat flake cereals seem to have now.

I was sitting here remembering that yellow box of cereal and how much my brothers and sister and I loved that cereal. And we always said it in full, oddly enough "Post Fortified Oat Flakes, please." I thought surely, I'll find some "Hometown Favorites" group where I could order it at $20 a box as a surprise for the next time we all get together. I, too, will join in this search for the Holy Gruel. My humble abode for a box of FOF.

I also loved Post Fortified Oat Flakes. I have been looking for it since they took it off the market. I raised my 3 children on it and they loved it also. I would buy 3 boxes a week. I have dreams of finding it in the cereal island also and look everytime I shop for ceral. Please Post, bring it back.

Ever since I arrived in the USA (back in the late 60s) POST brand OAT FLAKES was my favorite. I actually lived on it! I had it for breakfast, took a bowlful to my place of work and would pour milk and eat it at noon, and certainly would not retire to bed without a large bowl of it with whole milk - mmm how delicious was it!! I wrote to Post company asking them to revive it! I wonder why such a high quality, nourishing and TASTY product was discontinued! We need a consumer revolt (peaceful ofcourse) to bring this product back!! Any one ready to join?

Nancy, you are right about the malt. That's what I wanted to say myself when I ran across your comment. I can't believe I found this group. I've been hanging on to a "no expiration date" coupon for years (and I really mean yeeeaaarrrs) taking it out every once and a while and searching the stores. But to no avail. This time I was wondering If I should bother keeping it. That's why I decided to go online and see if there was even any hope of finding it. My search led me here. I think we should email Kim McMiller Associate Director, Consumer Relations a copy of all of our comments here. No interest in FOF? HA!

This is my alltime favorite cereal. I have been looking for it for years, until I found this website. Hope they bring it back. As kids we couldnt get Mom to buy it frequently enough because we finished the box the First morning we had it. She would then buy Wheaties or Cheerios and they would last for 2 months. LOL>

FLOAT FLAKES!!! That's what my 4 children called them when they were too little to say "Fortified Oat Flakes" and do we ever miss them. Back in the day, I wrote and called and did everything but headstands wtih the company. I was told that when GM or Nabisco or whoever (I forget, it's been so long) bought out Post, the new company dropped Oat Flakes. I bet if the demand were great enough they would reconsider, since money talks. Anyone have any bright ideas on what we could/should all do?

And I thought I was the only one that ate that cereal. It's wonderful to see so many other fans of Oat Flakes. I was the only one in my family that ate this cereal. The others were hooked on the sugared stuff. The ultimate bowl for me was Oat Flakes with about 1/2 cup of Grape Nuts on it - what a combo!! the Honey Bunches of Oats cereal has a hint of that great Oat Flakes taste but only a hint, and it's too sweet. Nothing compares.

Wow, I don't think I am misunderstood when I say you all sound like my own mind echoing. I've spoken to friends and coworkers for decades about that great cereal. Does anyone know what the specs actually were? I looked at some oat clusters, they were 30% sugar, beside the regular carbs. I couldn't eat them. So, Ralcorp, not only would I buy a premium box of FOF, I won't be buying anything else.

World's best cereal. Nothing else to say. After reading the Kraft comments, I feel like a father who gets "closure" after DNA tests verify that a body dug up was his son who was missing for the last 15 years. Sure, I strongly suspected the truth, but there was always just a shred of hope ...

I can't believe that so many other people miss that cereal as much as I do. I've spent years looking for an acceptable substitute for good old fortified oat flakes, but, sadly, nothing even comes close. I miss it so.
Nate - June 17, 2008 - Report this comment
FOF had an unusual flavor - hard to describe. it was sweet/salty/wheaty with a pleasant aftertaste. If you didn't eat them quickly, they absorbed the milk and turned into a gooey clump in the bowl - that still tasted good. They had a 'half life' of about a minute. When I heard the big, bad food manufacturer was discontinuing production, i was down. they could offer it today as a 'boutique' item and charge double and many people would buy it!

I grew up eating Oak Flakes (exclusively) as a kid in the 70's. I have always thought I was the only kid that actually liked them. It's cool to read how mnay other people liked them too. I can't believe this little cereal has such a fan club! I have been looking for Fortified Oat Flakes ever since they took it off the market also. I didn't realize I was in such good company. I just had an idea to google the cereal, and came accross this site. This was my favorite Cereal. Someone on another board suggested 365 brand "Oat Bran flakes" as a substitute, But I would rather have the original Post cereal myself.

Fortified Oat Flakes had to have been one of the best cereals that Post ever produced! The little unassuming tan box with the sheaves of wheat pictured on the front of the box in brown ink (late 1970s thru 80s) was apparently not flashy enough stacked up against other cereals. I'm really very sorry to see that it is indeed off the market, not just out of local store shelves. Ralcorp take note: This cereal may require up to date packaging that's a bit flashier, but the taste of this cereal was truly a winner! Somebody really goofed deciding to take this off the market!!! Be smart: Bring it back!!

OMG!!! I thought I was the only one like this. My dad always got the cereal & I would have to sit across the table and watch him eat it, it was torture! I wanted that cereal sooo bad! I would have to wait until my parents went out for an evening and leave me to babysit my siblings before I could sneak a bowl! The best part for me was when it soggy, but not complete mush. I can almost taste it now! Add me, my father and siblings to the list of people who would by this cereal. Maybe we just all need to email Kim until she gets tired of us and finally encourages someone to bring it back. I don't want it back for a limited time, I want it back forever! FOF! FOF! FOF! FOF!

Oh my goodness! I can't believe this site. I just made a bowl of cereal and all the sudden thought, some Fortified Oat Flakes would sure taste good. So I thought I'd get online and see if I could find any. I also grew up on them. I searched the cereal aisle for years trying to find them. My ex would even look at stores out of state (truckdriver) for me to see if he could find them. I've never found anything close to tasting as wonderful as FOF were. And for me, the soggier they got the more I liked em. What I wouldn't give to be able to purchase a box of them again. Hopefully someone will wise up to the fact that it was a great cereal and we do miss it and will bring it back. One can hope anyways!

What a long strange trip to this group-I ate them from the 60s until I could not find them anymore (when did they stop production?). By far, the best commercially produced cereal and I still miss them. The malt is a funny thing because I love malted milk balls and ice cream too and never made a connection. The other night one of my best friends for the last 20 years, EAS and I realized we are both passionate about our FOF-what a hoot-we have partied, vacationed, celebrated life events, and now we share PFOF. Bring them back!!

So, I'm not alone after all! I truly thought I was the only soul on earth that even remembered--much less craved--Post Fortified Oat Flakes. I can taste them right now just thinking about them. They were good crunchy, but there was nothing like that soaked-in-milk flavor for me! I called Post back in the early 90's to ask if the product was still in production as I could no longer locate it in any grocery store in San Diego. They sent me a list of grocery stores all up and down California where I could purchase my beloved Oat Flakes. I never did make the Quest for the Holy Gruel, but wish now that I had. I could have stockpiled and sold at a nice profit to all you other addicts on this site. Anyway, please notify me of any letter-writing or other campaign to bring back our beloved FOF. I will gladly help out!

I ate this growing up in the early 60's and LOVED them. My kids ate them in the 80's too. I miss them so much and think about them often. I even ate them with vanilla ice cream, they made a great crunch. I would think that with all the popular interest in oat products to lower your cholesterol they would be a big hit. Especially since they tast tons better than the wimpy flakes and stuff they sell now.

I have not found a cereal to come close the taste of Fortified Oat Flakes since they were discontinued. (Late 80's, early 90's?). it is one of my all-time favorite foods. Other oat flakes, (when you can actually find real flakes and not the so called "nuggets") just don't have that FLAVOR–soggy, semi-soggy, crunchy–you could not ruin the taste. Arrowhead Mills comes as close as any manufacturer that I know of to making a decent oat flake, but they are a pale imitation of the real thing. I too still crave this cereal and think about it more often than is probably healthy. To this day I wander the cereal isle with a sense of loss. Every post on this site is spot on! The irony in this whole thing is that it seemed like FOF were discontinued just before the big "oat bran boom" in the '90's, when they could have found a "new audience" with the health food types. I don't know what Post was thinking. Surely a good marketing campaign could have saved this great cereal. I can't believe there are like minded souls out there!! I will bookmark this site and gladly participate in any movement to bring them back!!

Count me as a member of the PFOF fan club! When and where were your last purchases of this fantastic cereal? Mine was in a local grocery store in Glen Ellen, CA (Sonoma County) in either 1992 or 1993. I also contacted Post several years ago and received the same response as many of you, but now think I'll keep trying on a more frequent basis (every few weeks) and clue their rep onto this website. You never know! I also agree with a few others that the best substitute right now is Whole Foods' 365 brand. Contact Post!!

Greeting fellow PFOF fans!!! I agree with all of you. Maybe with the Ralcorp aquisition we stand a chance of reviving one of the best cereals ever made. I assure Ralcorp their efforts will be rewarded greatly if they will bring back Post Fortified Oak Flakes back into production. I first found PFOF in a small grocery store when I was working in Bay City, Texas. It was the perfect start of my day, given that I worked construction. It was fillng and left me satified till lunch. And like the rest of my fans for this great cereal it made a great evenig snack (especially with a scoop or two of ice cream). I am sure there are thousands of great uses for PFOF's but nothing takes the place of that first bowl in the morning.

Call me surprised. I thought it was just me who missed this cereal so much. Every time I go to the store I walk down the cereal aisle hoping to spot that old familiar friend. That was my all time favorite cereal for 26+ years and would love to get my hands on another box. I wonder if Post still has the formula on how they made it? One thing I'd hate is for them to come out with some different spin of this old classic.
