    • 1. Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
      Need I say why?

    By: Greg M.
    • 10. Back 2 Good by Matchbox 20
A slightly guilty pleasure, but Rob Thomas' interpretation of this lyric is incredible. A song I identify with immediately. "Everyone hides shades of shame, but looking inside we're the same..."
    • 9. Bobcaygeon by The Tragically Hip
All the Hip fans I know will crucify me for picking this one, but it haunts me and won't let go. A song that really suits Downie's voice and he delivers. Understated brilliance. "I saw the constellations reveal themselves one star at a time..."
    • 8. Heaven Coming Down by The Tea Party
Just brilliant. You owe it to yourself to check out this band. They're intelligent, thoughtful, and incredibly talented. "Your soul shakes free as its conscience hits the ground..."
    • 7. Ants Marching by Dave Matthews Band
There's nobody like DMB. What a vocal. What instrumentation. One-of-a-kind, defies categorization. I love it. "We never say a thing and these crimes between us grow deeper..."
    • 6. Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) by Green Day
Generally speaking, I really don't like Green Day at all, but there's no doubt this track will be played for years to come. A lot to admire in its poetic simplicity. "It's not a question but a lesson learned in time..."
    • 5. Under The Bridge by Red Hot Chili Peppers
These guys are amazing. Exquisite guitar. The vocal hits just the right emotional chord. An important song about the despair that can lead one to drug use. "She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy..."
    • 4. Superman's Song by Crash Test Dummies
The unusual harmonies stay with you long afterward. An infectious lyric from a unique band. "Sometimes I despair the world will never see another man like him..." Sing along with Brad, if you can.
    • 3. The World I Know by Collective Soul
Still gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. A lyric from the heart, delivered with conviction. "All the words that I've been reading have now started the act of bleeding into one..."
    • 2. Losing My Religion by REM
A classic and sure to remain one for years to come. REM's best stuff is really from the 80's, and I also admire "Everybody Hurts", but this is the one everybody will remember for the signature mandolin. "Like a hurt lost and blinded fool, oh no I've said too much, I set it up..."
    • 1. No Rain by Blind Melon
By far the most memorable track from the decade. A poignant lyric belying great sadness - a tremendous vocal - fascinatingly juxtaposed with a tune you can't get out of your head. "I don't understand why I sleep all day, and I start to complain that there's no rain..." A song that always seems to end too soon; as much could be said for Shannon Hoon himself.

What, only ten? There were some great tracks that didn't make my list, (but probably would have on a different day) from Pearl Jam, Our Lady Peace, Radiohead, Soundgarden, U2, Cranberries, Third Eye Blind, Barenaked Ladies, Counting Crows, and even Neil Young and Sara McLachlan. I admire thoughtful lyrics and music that enhances them. Thankfully there are still lots of great artists out there who have both talent and something to say. I almost wish I'd made a more obscure list. Next time.
