Trenchcoats are and were for the misfits who want to stand out. Not really a mainstream fad.

They were here and there, but became more popular after the tragic Columbine school shooting, then every one who wasn't a preppy gangster or jock just HAD to have one, and as such they then became baned from most schools and then by pure rebellion alot of ppl regardless of then cliq would wear them witch kind of took away the appeal of them bc they seemed to be worn to go agenst the mainstream and so when every one is wearing something and becomes mainstream then whats the point? personally as a teen I thought a guy w/ a trench coat, wearing mainly black and haveing undercut hair (That is the upper layers are long to about the chin/shoulders and then shaved short in the lower back portion of the head) were really hot

I remember seeing my brother in a trenchcoat; he died two years later. I still wear it sometimes and remember how handsome he looked in it.

Hmm...I don't remember trenches being popular in the 90's. I was a teen back then, and I vividly remember grunge to hip hop urban wear. If this style came out after the Matrix then that would've been in late 99 which is the year Matrix came out anyway. So I'm thinking this was late 99 to early 2000's.

Trench coats are a mainstay, but usually were in a beige color. It wasn't until the mid to late 90s that dark colored ones became popular. And they usually aren't made out of wool.

This discussion, I think, is about two related but different articles of clothing. A trench coat, as I know it, is a coat between hip and knee length (sometimes longer) made of polyester or a polyester/cotton blend that is often treated to repel rain and snow. The fabric is thin but it may have an insulated liner that zips out. They usually come in shades of tan to gray though the Matrix and "goths" wore black. There are also overcoats/ topcoats, which are commonly dark in color, wool or a wool blend, sometimes cashmere. They also range from hip to knee length and are heavier, with a permanent lining. I still have a charcoal wool Christian Dior charcoal herringbone overcoat circa 1991 (though I can no longer wear it because I kept growing). I wore it as my everyday coat whether with dress pants to school, or with jeans and a sweatshirt.
