Description
Released in the late 90's, Tamagotchis were little digital pets on a keychain that needed your undivided attention. You could care for them by the touch of a button. Many schools banned them because they were distracting. Some children would get too into the toy and cry if their Tamagotchi died. Almost immediately after Tamagotchi's were released, imitations were all over the market.

I had quite a few of these. everyone i know had one of these. they sold out almost as soon as they hit shops each time. they were awesome but i never knew anyone cry over t, get upset maybe, but never cry. if kids were crying over it, they were too young to be playing it, the ones i had had an age limit of 8 plus

These were the hallmark of the late 90's I had them attached to my backpack and my guys would always seem to die. I was in K-Mart and I saw one! They brought'em back! Now that I'm more mature 10yrs later, they look kinda stupid lol

These things seemed so space-age and awesome back then. Ironically I just found mine about a week ago, so I'm determined to get some new batteries in it! The new ones are "cooler" I guess, but back then they just seemed so much more amazing since technology wasn't that far yet.

I have 4 tamagotchis left from my youth. I bought them 10 years ago. I have also a new tamagotchi, but I really find the new ones horrible. They're all the same shape, they don't have the originality they had in the 90's anymore. I remember how great it was to have one, because 10 years ago .. heh .. we didn't have all the technology we have now. Besides, they were really cheap ! The one we can find in the stores now really cost much (at least in France, they do.) I prefer the old ones.

I still have all of mine. Which is like, 25. Keep them all in a huge zip lock bag. When my school still allowed them I had like 9 of them attached to my backpack and a teacher at school brought this huge tangled MASS of virtual pets into the class room and demanded to know who they belonged to because they were ALL making noise.

I had a Little Mermaid one too, mine was yellow. I got it for Christmas AFTER they had been out and then banded from school. I was in 7th grade when they came out, several years after that i bought a NanoBaby and it was cooler than the Mermaid but kept dying, idk what happened to either one, musta lost them while moving

I forgot about these. I'm going to see if I can buy one online and hang it on my schoolbag to represent the 90s. That along with teenie beanie babies and anything else I can come across from the 90s

Now that I stay home a lot, I can keep my Little Mermaid Tamagotchi alive. It is a pain in the butt when I go somewhere and need to pause him because that throws off his sleep schedule and he wakes up at 3 in the morning. Other then that, pretty cool. Don't judge me for having one.
sarah - December 01, 2009 - Report this comment
I got mine a few days ago (like 3) but so far it's not annoying. I just turn off the sound and feed it 3 times a day. I have v4.5 and it's already a teenager. and how do you get a princess or mermaid tamagotchi?
to sarah from Laura - December 10, 2009 - Report this comment
you have to buy a tamagotchi that specifically has the little mermaid. It only has a fish or a crab. I don't know about yours, but i can pause mine when i'm busy or i get bored of it.

I am a Tamagotchi collector. I have nearly all versions since they came out in 1996. All old Tamagotchis are out of the stores now, but can be had on sites such as Ebay. The older ones can get a little pricey. Japanese ones are the best, however, and you don't have to understand Japanese, if you are familiar with Tamas at all. The cutest one is the Mini. It is only two-thirds the size of an original Tamagotchi, and it is very easy to take care of. There are now Tamagotchis with a color screen, but are made in Japanese language only. They are not for sale anywhere else besides Japan, but can be bought from Ebay.
Jan Griffiths - July 29, 2010 - Report this comment
I'm a collector, and you can buy Tamagotchis both old and new on Ebay. Prices are pretty reasonable, but be careful buying out of the USA. I've been lucky so far and never had a problem. I buy a lot of Japanese versions that aren't available anywhere else.

It's so funny because when I got one of these, I was in 6th grade and they sold them in our school store. The ones they had there were only imitations though, called "Virtual Pets 49 in 1" I bought mine for 5 bucks because everyone had one back then. These imitations are still around, if you look closely enough, haha.

The most expensive Tamas to date were made in 97 or 98 and one is a Christmas themed one called a Santaclautch, It was available only in Japan, but I got lucky and found one in a Goodwill store. The other is called Devilgotch, also Japanese only. I'm still looking for a good deal on one. The Japanese Tamas are much better in my opinion.

I had a bunch of these growing up, along with stuff like Tamagotchi plush dolls and Tamagotchi lanyards. But there was one product of Tamagotchi that not only was a Japanese import, but made my parents ban magical girl lockets and wands from our house! It was the Melody Charm. It plays 6 different songs, out of those 3 were from the Tamagotchi anime series. Well, I was trying to switch the song on it, and then my mom comes in and says "What lovely baby music you're playing!", because it played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I was really embarrassed by this, since I had Furbies that sang that song, and she never got mad over that! To think that I could have brought a Cure Module from Suite Pretty Cure for the same price makes me sick. Had I not brought the Melody Charm, I might have been able to buy more magical girl items. Plus, the seller did not warn us beforehand that it played that. I still like it anyways.

The only way I ever got one of these was finding one at a public park! My mom never bought me one and all of my friends had it. So when I finally found one, you can imagine how ecstatic I was and how out dated they were by that time, but I was so happy to have one. I think it was Tweety Bird. lol

I remember these. Everyone had one and, being a child, I whined about for weeks until I got one, too. I was so excited for a good three days until I realized how demanding they were, especially considering that they didn't do much but eat and die. Still, looking back now as an adult, it's a funny memento from days gone by.

To revive a "dead" Tama, just press the A and C buttons at the same time. That will give you a new egg, and you can start over. Batteries are changeable, so there is never a reason to discard it if the batteries die. As stated above, I collect Tamas, and have almost all versions from 1996-2014. The color versions(color+, iD, iDL, idL English, and the Ps) are superb. There is also a tama with red pixels, one with blue, and a Tamagotchi School too. So many improvements since they were first introduced in the 90s.
